I was reading on one of the links you provided that it may have influenced Diablo. A game I loved for the first few levels at least until the repetitiveness became too much. (Now there's a game where you need a mule to carry the treasure!) Are the dungeons/maps randomly created?

Yes the maps are randomly created, apart from a few "special" levels which are always the same.

Interesting stuff. I started playing one and found the dog amusing - if not useful for dispatching zombie-kobolds and lichen. I need to learn the keys though. The way you move about and the "line of site" reminded me a bit of my recent experiences off HeroQuest (adapted from the boardgame) which you may like (although you might find it a bit simplistic and over-graphical ) - home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/lm.broers/download.htm - I think DK-Rob recommended it somewhere in this thread (probably posted a better link too)

Lollipop, you do realise that by introducing me to this retro-style gaming wonder that I may award you the much coveted title of "Resident Ascendant Retro Gamer Geek". Would you like that?

A TITLE Hell yeah! No-one has ever called me geeky before ;D It is so exciting! You can of course play Nethack more graphically. If the link I gave you is the same one I downloaded from (which I think it is) then there should be a "Graphical Interface" option. But that seems rather like watching anime or foreign films with dubs instead of subtitles. Use the arrow keys to move around. It's not very often that you need to go diagonally. Or, since you're probably on desktop rather than laptop, use the number pad. Don't do the complicated letter things. Things it took me a while to work out: o = open (for doors) k = kick (for locked doors) s = search (to find hidden doors and passages, if you're stuck) Yay I finally know someone else who plays Nethack!

I tried the graphical version but suddenly seemed to working for me - unless that was something to do with me not keeping up with the dog. What about stairways? What's the code for going up or down them? k - hee hee.

Well the down stairways (marked as >) you press > to go down. The up stairways (marked as <) you press < to go up. Going up on the first level is escaping the game though. (You get an error message saying something like "THere will be no return. Still climb? (yn)) You mean you do do the graphical interface or you do not? You don't have to keep up with the dog! It ought to stay near you (ish).

I think the graphical interface version broke on me or something - unless I was cursed or over encumbered.
I'll definitely keep trying the ASCII version. I want to try and see if I can get it to run on and ancient laptop - the problem is I think it only fits onto a disk when it's compressed (zip file) - and I have lots of trouble unpacking files in DOS and Windows 3.1. blah blah etc.

^^ ;D I had a demo of the first one. I think I've played one on the PS2. The cramp will fade and callouses replace the blisters eventually ... ___ Right, Nethack. I found a tiny version which I could play from a floppy called Hack - 85k. (From: www.juiblex.co.uk/nethack/source.html ) It runs well on the 386DX laptop. It's a bit different - you start the game by shopping for equipment and there's no pets. It looks like this: Except it doesn't because the screen on the old laptop is senile so it really looks like this: Which I can live with.

But you have hardly any stats at the bottom!

It's one of the earliest versions of the game. I think you press a button to reveal stats. Also I think it's lacking in alot of the magic Nethack has.

When you say disk, do you mean floppy? It would fit onto a memory stick or CD-RW no problem, it's only 4 or 5 Meg.

I can't unzip it on the old 386 so it had to fit on a floppy-disk which hold about 1.5 MB - so the main program couldn't be any larger than that. It's interesting to see how many versions there actually are. This game has had a dedicated nerd-fan-base for a very very long time.
