Spirited Away icons/avatars

I was planning to do somesome screen captures from Spirited Away and perhaps make some icons, and then I find that Lidi on Live Journal has already done a bunch.
They're pretty cool though

How exactly d'you do screen captures of a film?

I had lots of trouble with dad's laptop trying to take still pics of Dark Crystal.
At home my Sonic DVD player has a built in snapshot camera. On dad's laptop I use AVS DVD Player - which was free on a disk on a magazine - its a freeware element to a larger package of tools which you can download I think. It also has a screen capture button (unlike Media Player).

I've yet to be able to crack small motion captures from DVD for icons - apart from frame by frame copy and paste.
