how the hell can you work out the time from the position of the sun? he could of painted it wherever he wanted and made up the smog..

Really? Stop hanging around with these academics.  Alex, I think the position of the sun was an obsession with Monet which is why he was writing about it in letters. If it takes you a long time to paint a picture and the sun comes up in a different place the light, shadows and colour are totally different, so it's not really about where he places the sun on the canvas ... I think. |
