Okay. So I've finally acquired some cheap DVD-Rs. "General Purpose" 8x 4.7 GB DVD-R by Datawrite. £12.50 for 50. I've bought them to back up my My Documents / Pictures folders - stuff like that. Nothing technical - no ripping, movie copying ... just data. And I can't copy anything into them - not even a simple folder. Any thoughts? really dissapointed and daren't take them back if I'm just f?cking them all up.

Break it down. What are you doing? Are you using a program to do it, or just manually in Windows Explorer?

Manually. Drag and drop with CD-Wizard in Windows XP. Keeps telling me it can't copy files. I'm thinking it might be a driver issue. I don't think I've written anything to a DVD since after the last crash I had.

It might be a drive issue. What does your drive call itself?
On the other hand, sometimes I'm told I can't copy stuff when I'm doing it manually. Computers can be a bit fussy/temperamental... Do you have any software you could use? Might make it easier - although it shouldn't be necessary, mght help avoid the hassle.

I can't find any specific drivers on the disks that came with the computer I'm pretty sure it's not what Windows XP thinks it is (a SONY something) - but CD-R writing works. Okay, going for a restart and trying something else.

Surely if it's just pictures and documents you'd be all right doing it to CD instead of DVD anyway. They can't be THAT huge...

"preparing to eject " ...
Some scary tickboxes about allowing the disc to be readable on other computers - did I tick the right one? I remember having trouble getting my dad's laptop to read a DVD ages ago - is this all linked ...? where are computers so unforgiving!?
It's ejected.
long pause
I'm staring at it.

Dude, you know it won't look any different once it's been written.
(You have to get the computer to look at it with its magic computer eyes to see if it's worked.)

Pirating is the way forward! Mmmmmmm I like CD pens. I've started drawing beautiful pictures on all of my homemade CDs/DVDs now.

No I lie. I've plenty to back up first, before all that films nonsense.

I had to steal some orange and yellow pens from the maths department (we had them when we were making a slideshow, for the OHP) to complete my Now! Christmas ones ;D

It's interesting stuff - there's loads of programs for shrinking DVDs to CD size. I was just saying today to a friend that there hardly seems any point to me copying my own films for people when they were nearly all bought on budget originally - however some of my older print DVDs may be without various copy-protection thingies so they'll be easier to rip. However most of my Disney / animations seem to be pretty well protected.
