I visited two vet surgeries this evening. Both were closed. No out of hours numbers or anything. RSPCA were only taking messages. And after all this marching around town with what I thought was a wounded pigeon chick, I probably ruined its chance of being fed my its mum by picking it up from the pavement where it was being practically stepped on. no room or know how to keep it safe overnight, I ended up returning the poor thing to the park ten yards from where I found it. I thought it had a grazed its head but I'm not sure now. It'll probably be killed by the park fox now. I think it must have slipped out of a nest in the rain. It was big but fluffy. Everyone at work today was extra upset as well. Just one of those days I guess. (oops sorry blah)

Fricking presentation has appeared out of nowhere. I only know about it because I've had emails from group members - I've now made myself look a dick by saying I was copied into the emails by mistake. Now I realise I haven't. How the f?ck do they expect us to cope with any of this? Met Reg is the most appalling module. Scream.

University. Period.
Seriously...what am I paying for exactly?!
I sit in lectures/practicals...baffle at what they are babbling on about, get no help, spend time trying to learn stuff I've never even heard of before from books about one thousand years old...
Then get told I've got to draw a map for next week or go on a fieldwork trip and identify lumps of rock from memory...or present a presentation on some random article...
Does anyone seriously pass university? How do they do it?! I want a 2:1 to help me get onto my PhD!!!! The only thing keeping me going is the career I want of which I need an environmental based undergraduate BSc!!!

(EDIT: Some .... ) People complete degrees because they are too frightened to explain to other people (like relatives) as to why they dropped out. I half believe that there's a conspiracy to break students in the first term, so that they'll drop out before christmas and the universities get to keep their fees for the whole year (well, there used to be some sort of scandal like that - maximise the intake, but then hope that enough students drop out in order to be actually manageable). Merf, you have to remember that at different stages in your course that you might get more choice in terms of what you want to write about. Definitely, when on the road to Masters or PhDs individual thought is more highly prized than just proving you can do the basics which is what 1st and even 2nd years can be about, so for you, this might actually be the tougher part of the course. Just a thought. I'm still not sure about my uni experience, there were many times when I really loathed it but I just couldn't see other options, and even now I look back and I still can't see how I'd do it differently, I'd certainly be much more prone to storming out of lectures and rehearsals now. anxiety kept me in line, I suppose. Remember that you can probably defer at different points in the course, so you need to set some sort of date goals (like Christmas or Easter etc.) - make it to that point then have a personal review. I do this with work - I think I'd promised myself that I was definitely leaving last July, and it looks like I'll make it through Christmas, so my next endpoint is March-ish, when I'll definitely leave (but maybe not) but it really helps me to make the future manageable in this way. (blaaah) Just be kind to yourself, also try not to worry about the marks, so much. Meeting the deadlines without being massively stressed is really good training in itself. (This is why most students get muntered with drink all the time I reckon)

Metabolic regulation in health and disease - presentation tomorrow re: adrenal cortex hormones. I am going to have to rely on group members a bit - my part overlaps too much with everyone else's. Not quite sure how to do it. But never mind, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Yep, that's the plan. I'm just worried I'll say, "I'll pass you over to Gemma to talk about that" and she'll just look at her notes in a panicked fashion because she wasn't intending to talk about anything of the sort. :/ We should have spent more time together but they didn't tell us about it! So we've only had the last week or so with everyone aware of what's going on, and we do have lives (and more importantly other modules). It's alright. Will be fine.

SHAUN Omg he's arrogant. Talking today - harmlessly - as we waited for our antibodies to adhere to the ELISA plate or something equally meaningless, I mentioned an old friend who had the idea that since smoking causes cancer and tea prevents cancer, her mother (a nurse) would be fine as long as she drank as much tea as she smoked cigarettes ;D This was a long time ago. Shaun proceeds to inform me that he wouldn't want to be treated by this nurse! I'm like, "Why? She's a perfectly nice lady and a good nurse." "She smokes."
...uh.right. And he talks about people being thick if they don't realise smoking is bad for you. He believes that it's that strongly carcinogenic that if he can smell cigarette smoke on someone it's endangering his health! He's a f?cking moron - anyone who looks at the statistics knows that smoking takes a good long time and continued exposure to give you cancer. It's not like standing in front of a bus. And this boy wants to be a f?cking research scientist?!!!
That's not what really pissed me off though - the idea that anyone would write someone off as a nurse, or any caregiver, because of ONE SMALL LIFESTYLE CHOICE. That's like asking not to be treated by someone of a particular religion, or someone with tattoos, or someone who is polyamorous or in an open relationship...
He'd argue that he's got science behind him but he f?cking doesn't - he's just a massive bigot.

We all have vices.
I'm a bit hung up on Mylem at the moment and shouldn't come back to him on this matter - but he was a good doctor, damnit, even though his personal life was a mess.

*grin* Maybe it's all down to GOOD science and BAD science. I enjoy the irony of health professionals who smoke, but to be honest I wouldn't care if a nurse treating me took crack or speed (unless it was on duty). Even advice from unhealthy people isn't hypocritical, as long it is based on facts or training, it's the attitude that may come with it which causes possible problems. I think piety (superiority) can be fairly upsetting along with absolutetisms, so in this case Shaun comes over worse than a smoking nurse (who probably doesn't light up on the ward which is the point) If anything, she'd be sympathetic with patients who have cravings and so forth. It's a bit silly to dismiss a human being entirely (although I know I do it quite a bit, I mean I'm very prejudiced about DSS/Jobcentre workers ...) Perhaps Shaun's clarity of thought is what science research needs, after all, us liberals are far too self-doubting to come to conclusions based on numbers and theories. Blah. Damn. Now I want a fag and a pizza, some blow, booze, porn and a young prostitute ...

There is no place in science for unsubstantiated absolutes. 20 years later, when hundreds of papers have been published that come to the same conclusion, and peer reviewed and picked apart and replicated... it can be seen as fact. In research, most of it's really about admitting that - "we still don't really know".
It's difficult to take advice from a health professional that they don't follow - "You need to get a decent amount of sleep each night. Ooh look, it's hour 17 of my 30 hour shift." and so on. But it doesn't mean they are a crap health professional. - and believe it or not, this isn't the argument we were having!
And more importantly - smelling smoke is NO DANGER TO YOUR HEALTH. I mean zomg. Sometimes something smells of **** but it's not the same as putting it in your face. And if you can smell alcohol on someone it doesn't mean your liver's going to conk out.
I found it incredibly insulting for him to tell me this. And then to insist upon it so arrogantly. I'll admit that I was in a pretty delicate mood and there was probably a degree of "Mylem was a good doctor!" in my outrage, but regardless of that I still think it's pretty disgusting. :/

f?cking snow. I rang the CMHT to cancel an appointment with Tom today, only to find he's off sick anyway. That works out ok, but at what point were they have going to have told me about his absence?? After I'd struggled through thick snow to there, just to be turned away?? Ggrrrr.

Went to the CMHT yesterday for an appointment with Tom. The receptionist said he wasn't there, he's taken sudden annual leave and they have no idea how long he'll be away. They didn't phone to tell me, they just told me when I had struggled through town. This is the 3rd time in 2 months this has happened, and I'm incredibly pissed off about it. Apart from the inconvenience and wasted time, I also really need to see him.

Twatty 6 monthly council-contract gas-safety-checkers random appointment system stupid attitude, cos if you're not there when we say we'll take you to court etc. and maybe you'll die from carbon monoxide, but you'll deserve it because you didn't want to stay in for four hours on the exact day or you were at work or something selfish ... etc. But hey.

Doctor's! I daren't go, because whenever I go they just tell me what I do not want to hear!
I think sadly, I have Fibromyalgia...although the doctor's don't want to diagnose me. They've just diagnosed me with "pain issues" and "sleep problems". Which is basically the same thing...just without a convieniant name.
I've now got into the same mind set I got into when I was diagnosed with "mental" difficulties...that I'm not really differently abled and I need to snap out of it.
Plus this women thinking smoking makes her baby stronger. lol
