Slightly off topic, but if you like graphic novels that are complete works and are more about the artwork than strange kids with eyeballs the size of watermelons running around killing each other then you should cheack out The Compleat Moonshadow, written and illustrated by J.M. DeMatteis, and Jon J. Muth. It is a little weird but it's..... well for want of a better word.... beautiful.
It took me quite a long time to read it as it's not something that you want to rush, but I think you would enjoy it.

I've not heard of the ones you're talking about, but you're correct - I like to buy graphic novels which aren't part of a massive series (the exception was Sandman), which have a single complete narrative, I don't really collect comics, and am a sucker for fine art in graphic novels, but can't always afford them. I seem to also be trapped in the late 80's, early 90's - Alan Moore and Dave McKean (with bits of Gaimen). I just don't get all the superhero references ( Green Lantern 3000 - JLA Reformed or whatever, but I know where Watchman is coming from (for example). A local book shop has finally cottoned on to Manga - and I wouldn't know where to start. But I'm glad I resist because I really would spend all my money on collecting a whole series very quickly.

Another good one that I liekd that is a one off is Gon, all about a little dragon/lizard thing and the adventures he has. No speech at all in it but it's still manages to be funny.
This is a huge series, but the Cerebus the aardvark stuff is really good. But that is massiveily huge and hard to find.

I think both might be in my local libary (an episode from Cerebus, anyhow). Perhaps Gon will be good research for my monster doodles.
