Have you seen the film? I saw it one Sunday afternoon when I must have been about 6 or 7. The last bit where the silhouette of Mrs Danvers is standing in the flames of the burning building was scorched into my mind forever! Very scary. But I loved it.

No, I didn't know there was one. Don't say too much about the book because I can't remember the story....

It's an old black and white film version, directed by a certain Mr Alfred Hitchcock, I believe. Very good.

Watched The Golden Compass this weekend and felt like I was missing out on quite a bit of the story, so went out and bought the whole trilogy!

I love that trilogy. My favourite was the 2nd one, "The Subtle Knife". I love the first one, too, though. I got a bit bogged down with parts of the 3rd one, but it was well-worth it when I pushed on through the middle bit.

I popped into The Works briefly today, and saw they have a boxed set of about 10 Daphne Du Maurier novels (including Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek, My Cousin Rachel, etc) for £9.99. Bargain. Thought it was a bargain and I should report it as such here.

I was charity-book-shopping, this afternoon. I bought - a CBT based book on "Overcoming Insomnia and Sleep Problems" by Colin Espie - a novel called "The Bluebird Cafe" by Rebecca Smith - a cartoon book by Jacky Fleming, called "Demented" - a biography called "The Poison Principle" by Gail Bell Got all 4 for £7.50. All in quite good condition, and not too sticky or smelly. Then I went to the library and got out a few Agatha Christies, as I used to love them and read loads of them when I was about 13-14, and fancied having another bash at some at them. I don't like Poirot ones, though - only Marples and others.

Wicked is getting to the depressing section of the book now. I liked it when they were all happy and at school.
Can't wait to start Wolf of the Plains.

I remember loving The Subtle Knife, but I can't remember anything about it. Want to reread them all, but we've only got Northern Lights.

I remember I liked The Subtle Knife, too, but also can't remember much detail about it.
I actually managed to walk past the Age Concern charity bookshop in town, today... either I'm getting stronger and resisting the pull, or I really am too knackered, lol.

I had to read Northern Lights about three times to get what was actually going on (but then I was eight at the time). Ahh, Age Concern Bookshop. I get all my books there. It's so delightfully cheap.

Has anyone read "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho?
I'm supposed to read it for a book group and really don't fancy it, to be honest. Looks suspiciously like airy-fairey spiritual nonsense and I just can't be doing with it at the moment.
Would appreciate any thoughts or comments on it, though, if anyone else has read it?

Been reading bits of Titus Groan - the prose is fabulous and rather drole to witty. I'm pushing on with Northern Lights (I did promise my friend I'd try to read the trilogy). So watch this space because I'll probably be asking questions - mainly about alternative history.

Book shopping joy abounds! 3rd April sees the release of "Once Upon a Time in the North" - a sort of prequel type thing to the Dark Materials trilogy - it's going to be a gorgeous little dark blue hardback - will match the little dark red hardback "Lyra's Oxford" that came out a couple of years ago. I've already pre-ordered my copy. Once Upon a Time in the NorthI've ordered a rather beautiful paperback edition of the whole Gormenghast trilogy, as it's so fantastically designed and is only just over a tenner. Whether I ever have the concentration span to read such a thing is difficult to know, but I live in hope of my faculties returning... Gormenghast TrilogyI also ordered:- Addition, by Toni JordanSomething To Tell You, by Hanif KureishiLibrary Confidential, by Don BorchettThe Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy, by Tim BurtonSilent Scream, by Josh CannonPerfect: Anorexia and Me, by Emily HalbanAmerica Unchained, by Dave GormanThe Irresistible Inheritance of Wilberforce, by Paul TordayOk, so unemployment / long-term incapacity benefit approaches, but life just ain't gonna be worth living without books. (Sh*t, maybe I should try to cling to my book trade job, even if just for the staff discounts... b*gger, b*gger, what to do? what to do? I'd sell a kidney on Ebay, only they're both f*cked as well...)
