Whilst failing to produce any decent smileys of my own I've been investigating the fascinatingly primitive (but exponential) world of pixel (2D blocky/isometric) graphics. Any one have any good links or examples they've come across? Just found this: www.lovepixel.idv.tw/ and this: www.pixelmuseum.com/html/pixel-gallery.htmlPlease add links. Also feel free to add any icon / small pixelly creations here! ;D

Some of my own experiments from this evening:
A pile of treasure:
On a larger scale - hoping to get much smaller than this: A dragon (or "wyrm")
Crudely animated dragon (very rough - only now do I notice that I hadn't rubbed out the fire properly) But he's fairly cool none the less.
(I'm such a geek )

This afternoon / evening I made: A tiny goblin: Maybe we can make him charge using the "move" text code ;D: ... Also an animated Eye Monster:

Yay! Glad you like em. Although I'm beginning to wonder why I started down this route. Smaller they are the more fun / challenge it is. I think I was supposed to be working on some smileys .. lol I like the Eye Monster.

You can make little scenes: ... The greedy goblin crept up to the pile of treasure, with lance in hand, hoping that the Cyclopmon wouldn't see him ... ;D

You can make little scenes: That high-pitched whirring sound you can hear is Alan Turing spinning in his grave...

This is a page from a tutorial which employs examples of graphics from older games like Secret of Mana. I haven't read it all yet - but I'm posting it here for future reference. tsugumo.swoo.net/tutorial/chapter5.htmfascinating stuff

Here's a pixel piccy of Tinkerbell: It still needs some tinkering with I reckon (boom, boom, ahem ) Was hoping to have it animate it but I thought I'd post it in case it all gets a bit complex and I dont finish it Her shape (leg pose) is roughly based on a Vargas picture (like the women painted upon the sides of aircraft in WWII - some of them have dramatic yet dainty poses). I'm not entirely happy with the wings - they're copied and modified straight from some butterfly clipart. I'm slowly learning about shading and black outlines - maybe she needs more definition on hands and head. To start with I'm planning to animate the wings, the sparkle on the wand, and then maybe a slight bobbing suggestive of magical hovering. The graphic is small so even an animated gif will have minimal loading times. Very rough/cheating animation of wings: Keep watching this space. (Warning filling in pixels can send you totally insane )

Drum roll please .... Fully animated Tinkerbell: I'm not happy with the software I'm using - but I found a happy compromise by using layers in paint shop pro as a flip book before cutting and pasting individual cells/frames into JASC Animation Shop 3. (grr, and I've lost transparency in the process)
I've tried to make up bob up and down in a sort of hover - but its a bit clumsy (maybe I've looked at it for too long - any opinions?)- so I think I'll stick with the animation above.

You think? Cool. (I'm sure I can get rid of the the white background as well - but it can wait - I want to try something else for a bit ) Thanks.

Gave in - I found a way just to replace the all of the white with transparency - which effects the socks and wings too - but this is a learning curve. Also noticed that's its all distorted as an avatar - I guess resizing to 65x65 doesnt seem to work very well (as Tinkerbell I think as just found out) So here's a couple of graphics which I'm hoping will work better. Resized to 59x65 - may still distort Cropped down to 65x65 - "zoomed" image is perhaps more dramatic on such a small scale

LOL ;D "left-click!" - "right click!" I prepare/draw the pics in Paint Shop Pro 7 - but with pixels normal Paint might do the job.) Sometimes I use layers or move bits of the graphics about. Then I copy pics into JASC Animation Shop and eventually save as an animated GIF file (which works in webpages and message boards like this one) Theres a link to a flip book GIF animator somewhere in this board (the Art Gallery) I think. That's if you really want to throw all your free time away. (I still have so much to learn ... maybe the Dark Side would be quicker, easier ...)

(suddenlys thinks about Itchy and Scratchy and all that violence ... why does it appeal so much?! ;D ) Stole and cropped some frames from a Pathe newsreel mpg and quickly came up with this: Larger version (120k) : img.photobucket.com/albums/v600/goblinmarket/atom.gif(selling this one would be a serious infringement on copywrite law )
