From a psychological point of view I find it all extremely disturbing, it's like when upper class people went along to mental asylums to watch all the 'insane' people maim themselves and dribble. It's pure exploitation, and frankly it's quite sick.

It's pure exploitation, and frankly it's quite sick. Yup. It really is quite awful, much like watching videos of people falling over or pets being dressed up. However, what is your point? These people are grown up enough to sign legal forms or whatever before going to BB. They want to be on BB, usually for the sake of ego and they have seen several series where people before them have been exploited. I find it more frightening that these people are allowed to vote for polititions and have children (but then I feel that way about a lot of people). I've had some real moral dilemnas about am I allowed to judge people on TV or not and now I don't feel sorry for anyone. Many of the contestants are ridiculed but still come out believing that they are the bees-knees and get press contracts to boot. So stupid and arrogant, that they don't learn anything or even suffer psychologically (from what we know, and no more than going to a boot camp or on holiday with a group of strangers). One of them ends up being rich too. Stupidity+ Ego+ Greed = our entertainment. But I think the ethical side of things is important to note, and I'm often surprised more people don't pick up on it, partly because we don't want to admit how bad our tastes really are and how truly wicked human mind can be when it comes to desiring new types of entertainment. (blah ...)

Heh, knew someone'd bring that up. In my opinion, technically you can say they go into it with their eyes open, but look at the people who're in the house this year. Body dysmorphic, anorexic, suicidal depressive. The promise and ideal of what the show presents can be overwhelming, but the reality is something completely different. The programmers sell it as something different to what it is, and they put in the most fragile people who they know are gonna crack and put them under unbelievable pressure to make sure they do it in spectacular fashion. All in the name of entertainment?
Meh. The ethics of it just don't really sit right with me.

Absolutely - and it would be boring if they choose wll balanced people. What's the word DAT500 likes to use a lot ...? It's quite misanthropic. Your association with the sanitorium-zoos is very apt.

Of course it would be! Normality isn't supposed to be interesting Misanthropic is a bit harsh, I think it just appeals to the basic human instinct to want to feel superior to as many people as possible. We watch it to feel better about ourselves. Random fact: it was a dutchman who first came up with the idea. I saw the very first series on dutch tv.

It's not just the same as Deal or No Deal, is it? In Deal or No Deal you aren't locked in a house with strangers for up to 13 weeks.
But it's their choice. Free will...

What's wrong with debating?! Far more interesting than watching

Debating is cool, after all, some of us need to prove that we did arts degrees, and that it all wasn't a waste of time. Goddamn Dutch. I have a bone to pick with ! I was watching it live last night and when they Ashlene and Pete started snogging they cut to the garden. I mean what's the point of "live" TV if they are going to save the only interesting stuff for the main programme?

Confused by Starlight's comment.
Aisleyne.
I can't call her "Ash-leene" anymore. Now I know how her name is spelt. To me, she is, "Eyes lane".

But this isn't one of those things, like where you stand around with your friends and have to take part in every conversation, and if you don't like it, change it. Threads that don't interest me I stay away from. That's the thing. Threads are on a topic. You take part... if you want.
