Okay, it's just a recording of a public lecture he gave. (cross-posted from my blog and other places ...) Almost as strange as listening to recordings of your own voice, is listening to recordings of one’s own father in a formal context. Nepotism aside, my father, Prof Ray Meddis doing what he does best: talk about sciencey type things. This is a lecture he gave about hearing and perception to the public recently this year. Human Hearing: from the ear to the mind (click for link)I recommend Part 1 (examples employing speech and music) and Part 4 (contains some experiments in stereo hearing and freaky effects created by the brain). Quicktime Required. Wear headphones for the best effect. Warning: keep the volume low – there lots of interesting tones – some of which are of higher pitches. (My favourite very-my-dad quote is “She’s not just a pretty face. She has an astonishing epiglottis too.”)

I think so. I didn't know he'd pulled it until the other day.

I like sound and what it can do to people. I have a live set of a very droney band that had the plug pulled on them by the police as all the low end noise they were pumping out was making the buildings a few streets away vibrate too much Sound is powerful and I would love to be able to use it effectivly. I've read little bits on things about some low end frequencies making the person hearing it lose control of their bowels, and things like using sounds to knock people down. I have another album that comes on 2 cd's, you play them both at the same time on different stereos and the effect is over whelming, I've never felt like a sound was towering over me and was about to crush me before.
