Dull thread I know but .... I'm lending the Computer Project a portable colour TV and a Sega Mega-drive with no aerial purely for the purposes of playing games like Sonic and Columns. The TV License people say: If you use a TV or any other device to receive or record TV programmes (for example, a VCR, set-top box, DVD recorder or PC with a broadcast card) - you need a TV Licence. You are required by law to have one. www.tvlicensing.co.uk/My project leader is worried about fines. What do you reckon? If the TV doesn't recieve any programmes ...?

I'd email the tv licence people and ask them, chances are they will argue that as you are turning a tv on you need a licence for it.
ok so just found this on their site
What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence? - You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.
Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:

LOL - man, that's like "Put your head in this noose" Thanks for finding that though. It might only be for a few weeks until we get these other computers up and running. I may argue there's a case for risking it for a couple of weeks - and I pratically live across the road. Oh well, I'll just have to tell them they won't be able to play Sonic and Mickey Mania ... hopefully the medication they all take will get them through ... ;D

I'd risk it myself and if by chance they do happen to find out just say that as your not picking up any tv channels that you didnt' think you needed a licence for it. Or find a cute small child to cry when the nasty tv man comes, that'll guilt trip them into leaving you alone Make the child look slightly soiled as well, I'm thinking street urchin from Oliver kind of thing hehehe

There's no children, but some of the clients often look worse for wear. ;D I think you're right.
Do I need a license for an orphan child?

I'm sure there is a company that could rent you a slightly soiled small child that can cry on demand somewhere

I guess it's non-residential as well. I may email them at a later dater date if anyone kicks up a fuss. It's bad enough that the computer project has the evil internet - the board (the elders) think it's all about p0rn and gambling - I should be so lucky.
