Let joy be unconfined! First we hear that there's going to be a new Kate Bush album this year, and now someone's rattled Portishead's cage. Just because they haven't released an album for 8 years 1 some people assumed that they'd split up! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/4185511.stm 1Yes, I know about the live album, and Beth Gibbons' lovely Rustin Man effort. Oh, and while we're on the subject of Rustin Man, what on Earth is wrong with you young 'uns? Yes, you lot who bought that tedious Keane album. Go out and buy the Talk Talk back catalogue (approximately 2.50 from any charity shop), and see how that that bass/piano/drums thing should really be done. *Wanders off muttering and complaining about lack of Spangles/Caramacs/Watney's Red Barrel...*

I LIKE PORTISHEAD!!! But I do suspect that this is gonna suck quite spectacularly. Did you see Bill Bailey rewrite the National Anthem in a Portishead theme to make it more appropriate for the British mentality??? I was in histerics!

It's not like they're in any kind of a rush, so, they'll hopefully have applied a fair amount of quality control. It'll be interesting to see how, if at all they've progressed though. Massive Attack's follow up to Mezzanine was just as eagerly awaited and was... er, disappointing. I did, as part of his "Part Troll" show. The Kraftwerk tribute in the encore is a piece of genuis. Speaking of which, "Part Troll" is being screened either tonight or tomorrow night on Channel 4.

In other "But I thought they were dead" news, this year sees the release of the new New Order album, and in July, Bob Mould's album 'Body Of Song' is finally released.

I'll be interested to hear the new Portishead as I think their eponymous album is much better than Dummy. I'm still smarting from The Red Shoes by Kate Bush, what was she thinking? Not a patch on The Sensual World.
Still, last year saw some great releases from Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Bola, Mark Van Hoen, Lustmord, Ministry, Richard H Kirk and loads others - a shame that Leonard Cohen's album was a bit weak though.

Hmmm. With you on the Kate Bush thing. A collision between her and my least favourite Powell/Pressburger film equals, well, I'm not entirley sure. And asking Lenny Henry to do backing vocals? Er, excuse me?
I somehow missed the Ministry release, as I matter of fact I I've probably bought Front 242 stuff more recently than I've bought anything by Ministry. Same old same old?
And the Nick Cave album(s) is/are superb.

Well, it's new same old, in a funny way. Ministry lost their way after The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, even though Psalm 69 had some good tunes on it, it lost the consistency they had before. All the albums that followed went into rather turgid riffola, despite the odd highpoint, tracks like The Fall spring to mind because it's excellent. Still, who says Bush hasn't given us anything, as the departure of Paul Barker and the Presidency of Dubya, has given Jourgensen the bombastic sheen of the glory years. On the Front 242 tip, have you heard Male Or Female and Speed Tribe?
