what songs have meaning to you? and why? since i made this thread i will start with a few neil young - old man i wont bore you with all the lyrics, just the bit that means most to me "Old man look at my life, Twenty four and there's so much more Live alone in a paradise That makes me think of two." so can you guess i 24 and live alone? thats me at the moment, i want someone so badly it hurts nine inch nails the fragile again not all the lyrics, just bits that mean something to me "i won't let you fall apart i won't let you fall apart i won't let you fall apart i won't let you fall apart" all my life ive been waiting for someone to say that to me, and the only time i hear it is in a song sepultura - born stubborn and i dont just like this song cus im stubborn "I Got My Tribe It's My Own Right And I Don't Have To Tell You Why It's Been Like That From The Start And You Can't Break It Apart Sepultura In Our Hearts Can't Take It Away These Roots Will Always Remain" i like the idea of belonging to something that no matter what it always stays with you, a community that it doesnt matter how long you leave it for, your always welcomed back with open arms and a smile

Fascinating stuff dk I keep returning to U2's Actung Baby album (copied tape of): All sorts of lyrics resound - those Bono throw-away end-of-century ennui one-liners ... "Dressed up like a car-crash, You're wheels are turning, But you're upside down ..." - I often think it when I see girls I know all dressed up up but kind of broken inside. ... The immortal Lennon: "One thing you can't hide, Is when you're crippled inside!" ;D I love that song! And dont get me started on Lenny Cohen ...

And dont get me started on Lenny Cohen ... I'm reminded of a joke concerning Kurt Cobain arriving in heaven, to be met by Jimi Hendrix. "Hey man, says Jimi, "Why don't you come along for a jam session? We've got Keith Moon on drums, and Lennon says he'll fill in on bass". Kurt, being a polite young man, accepts the invitation and turns up at the rehersal cloud, where he is surprised to see Bono at the microphone. "Hey, Jimi, I didn't know Bono was dead". "Nah, that's God", replied Jimi, "He only think's he's Bono". No? OK, suit yourself. I agree with GK on the subject of Leonard Cohen though, he's one of the best lyricists of the past two hundred years- certainly on a parr with Jacque Brel or The Cheeky Girls. If you're new to his work, try and get hold of the album "I'm Your Man". Stand out tracks include 'First We Take Manhattan' and 'Tower of Song'. From earlier in his career, check out 'So long, Marianne', 'Sisters Of Mercy', 'Bird on a Wire' and 'Suzanne'. Neil Diamond did a version of the latter on his album "Stones" which is a thing of utter beauty. Yes. It. Is.

I'd probably go for Songs of Love and Hate over I'm Your Man, different beasts admittedly, but there's something incredibly pure and naked about Cohen's third album.

a song that means something to me would be Monkeys Gone to Heaven by The Pixies- it brings back so many awesome memories and will always make me smile ;D November 1988, Newcastle. Black Francis screamed the line "and if the devil is six!" and 500 people shouted back "then God is seven!". Sent a shiver down the spine. I'm sad to report that after 16 years faithful service, My Death To The Pixies t-shirt died from armpit failure, and has gone to shirt Valhalla- the box of cloths used to clean motorbikes at Juno Towers.

One thing I cannot stand is people who say his songs lack humour. More opften than not, these are the sort of people who think it's acceptable to wear a tie with cartoon characters on it.

There's a strange, twisted, majority out there who need to be told how to think, feel and act. These people will never know the thrill of Mr Cave and his chums. Now there's a man who knows how to write a love song.

Lyrics that mean something. Nearly went mad today when I heard "Last Christmas" by Wham today. It was a dark time for the Rebel Alliance ...

So many songs have meanings to me... I kind of give people and places and events thier own soundtracks, but here are a couple:
Hurt - Johny Cash (I prefer his cover to the NIN original) This song sums me up at the moment.
Middle - Jimmy Eat World This song sums up how I want to be.

marilyn manson---the long hard road out of hell
I want to fly into your sun Need faith to make me numb Live like a teenage christ Im a saint, got a date with suicide
Oh Mary, Mary To be this young is oh so scary Mary, Mary To be this young im oh so scared I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
You never said forever, could ever hurt like this You never said forever, could ever hurt like this
Spin my way out of hell, theres nothing left this soul to sell
Live fast and die fast too How many times to do this for you? How many times to do this for you?
Mary, Mary To be this young im oh so scared I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
You never said forever, could ever hurt like this You never said forever, could ever hurt like this
I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
Long hard road, out of hell
I wanna live, I wanna love But its a long hard road, out of hell
Sell my soul for anything, anything but you Sell my soul for anything, anything but you

I cannot believe you just said that! Why? It's one of the best pop songs ever. Easily as good as Nine Inch Nails' version of 'Achy Breaky Heart'
